GlobeXplorer’s ImageConnect extension for mapping software provides a reliable, easy-to-use service that provides much of the spatial information used in environmental investigations. Imagery supports EPA’s team of investigators in several ways:

• Bird’s eye view of important features
• Change detection for geophysical investigations
• Virtual field reconnaissance to help familiarize investigators with a site they may have never visited
• Background image layer for vector data such as sampling points, boundary lines, spill areas recorded with a field GPS unit
• Background image layer for building footprints when sampling locations must be digitized as non-GPS points
• Effective illustrations in reports, exhibits, and technical presentations

GlobeXplorer Image Connect allows EPA investigators to quickly download high-resolution imagery in the desired projection using ESRI ArcView or ArcMap. The investigator can choose the available dates of imagery coverage for an area to perform change detection to support geophysical investigations, locate spilled or mishandled materials, or provide insight into site operations. Image Connect provides sitespecific high-resolution imagery for “virtual field reconnaissance” to help familiarize investigators with a site they may have never visited.

EPA’s Field scientists use GlobeXplorer imagery in a Trimble GeoXT GPS unit to serve as a background image layer when recording features. When GPS is not available or practical, GlobeXplorer images serve as a base layer in the Trimble GeoXT for digitizing non-GPS features.
